The Sansa E270 is a great portable media player by itself, but when Rockbox is installed on it, it makes it fantastic!
The menus, folders, and filenames are spoken, which makes this player as accessible as any player out there. Using the Rockbox Utility, you can set it up to use your choice of SAPI voices that are available on your own computer; however, it will come completely set up and speaking when you purchase it from us.
Rockbox allows the Sansa E270 to use microSD and microSDHC cards presently up to 16 GB, not just limited to the microSD cards useable with the Sansa firmware. By adding a microSDHC 16 GB memory card, you can expand your player from 6 GB up to a whopping total of 22 GB at once! (Once manufacturers have come out with their 32 GB microSDHC card, you should be able to get a total of 38 GB!!) Of course, you can have an inexhaustible supply of microSDHC memory cards as well, making your storage capacity virtually unlimited!
Rockbox also adds much more functionality and allows you to play many different file formats such as OGG Vorbis, FLAC, AAC, AIFF, and many others aside from the usual MP3, WMA, WAV, etc. It won’t however, play DRM-protected files.
It provides much better control over the options for the player and is an improvement over the original Sansa firmware. You get excellent book marking capabilities, keeping track of up to 10 files at one time. You can also move back to an earlier bookmark if you so desire.
You can use your player to find out the time and date in 12-hour or 24-hour format and has a sleep timer as well!
It gives you more control over the sound of your player by using the build in graphic equalizer, stereo width, and other sound settings.
The player has a built-in FM stereo receiver with plenty of presets so you can save your favorite stations and access them instantly.
You can record from the FM stereo or use it as a note taker by using the built-in microphone. You can record in WAV, AIFF, WAV Pack, or MP3 and you can change the bit rate as you like.
When you plug this player into your computer, it comes up just like a regular flash drive and you can copy and paste your files onto it very easily. There's no need for any music management software and the inaccessibility associated with them.
The above is just a sampling of the many features of Rockbox; it can do a lot more. The Rockbox firmware is very impressive and makes the Sansa E270 very accessible. It makes it very easy to navigate the menus and do just about everything that is possible on this player.
